As the Legal Assistant, you will provide senior level administrative legal support to the Legal Services Section of the Calgary Police Service (CPS). You will assist lawyers in their day-to-day work, including preparation of PowerPoint presentations and completing other work as assigned. Primary duties include:

  • Plan meetings, organize research, and prepare court documents, books of authorities, and affidavits.
  • Provide administrative support and prepare legal documents for the Legal Counsel. Transcribe documents and assist with research background work.
  • Maintain a complex filing system for legal briefs, documents and reports, and updates to legal reference materials as required.
  • Create and update spreadsheets to track legal issues and report to various CPS client units.
  • Coordinate travel arrangements and registrations and prepare expense reports.
  • Maintain technical expertise and legal knowledge skills.

Qualifications* A 1-year Legal Assistant certificate and a minimum of 5 years of experience working in civil litigation; OR

  • A 2-year Legal Assistant diploma and a minimum of 3 years of experience working in civil litigation.
  • Advanced level of proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Adobe Acrobat Reader/Pro is required.
  • Advanced writing and formatting skills, the ability to prepare or revise large and complicated office documents, and knowledge of legal terminology is required.
  • Familiarity with JOIN, Sentry, and Content Server is considered an asset.
  • Prior experience in a law enforcement environment is also considered an asset.

Pre-employment Requirements* An enhanced security clearance will be conducted.

  • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications. Education obtained from out of country must have or be able to obtain, an Education Credential Assessment (ECA) for confirmation of equivalent credentials.

Position Type: 1 Permanent

Compensation: Pay Grade 8 $39.00 - 52.14 per hour

Hours of work: Standard 35 hour work week.

Days of work: This position works a 5 day work week with 1 day off in a 3 week cycle.

Location: 5111 47 Street N.E.
