On 31 March 2025, Premier Hon Roger Cook MLA announced a reform of WA Government departments. As part of this reform, all housing-related functions managed by the Department of Communities (Communities) have been transitioning to the newly established Department of Housing and Works (DHW) since 1 July 2025. Corporate services functions and staff are proposed to transfer in multiple tranches by 31 December 2026. Please note, the advertised position is an identified DHW position which will transfer at some stage in 2026.

Communities are managing this recruitment process and once the position is transferred, DHW will be employing authority. The Role

This role will see you providing practical legal advice for unique Housing Authority projects, initiatives and litigation as well as niche areas of the law. We are looking for highly motivated lawyers with commercial, property and / or litigation experience.

This role operates with relative autonomy, initiative and judgement to manage routine to moderately complex cases / matters and assist Principal Lawyers with more complex cases / matters, research and support. The extent and nature of the legal work allocated will vary according to expertise.

To be considered for a position, you will need to:

be client focussed, solution oriented, and self-aware;

have excellent technical legal skills; and

have a track record of exercising sound and ethical judgment in the delivery of legal services..

Qualification Requirements

Bachelor of Laws Degree AND admission as a practitioner, however described, of the Supreme Court of Western Australia.

The Opportunity

There are two, permanent Specified Callings Level 3 opportunities available for filling, with the possibility of additional anticipated opportunities arising in the Specified Callings Level 2 and 3 positions in the near future.

Remaining suitable applicants will be placed in a pool from which appointments will be made for future vacancies that arise for the Specified Callings Level 2 and 3 positions, or other similar roles, within the next 12 months. Part-time flexible options can be considered.
