Family Law Paralegal / Legal Assistant

Location: Indianapolis, Indiana Salary: $40,000–$50,000 annually, depending on experience

We are a small, client-focused family law practice seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Family Law Paralegal / Legal Assistant to join our team. This position offers the opportunity to work closely with an experienced attorney, manage cases from start to finish, and play a key role in helping clients navigate some of life's most challenging legal matters.

The ideal candidate is organized, professional, comfortable communicating with clients, and capable of managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Divorce and legal separation
  • Child custody and parenting time
  • Child support
  • Paternity
  • Adoption
  • Guardianship
  • Expungements

RESPONSIBILITIES

Case Management

  • Assist in managing family law cases from intake through resolution.
  • Maintain case information and calendars using Clio.
  • Monitor deadlines, court dates, and client communications.
  • Maintain active case lists and track case status and action items.

Paralegal Duties

  • Draft pleadings, motions, notices, summonses, subpoenas, and other legal documents.
  • Prepare and electronically file documents with Indiana courts.
  • Draft correspondence to clients, opposing counsel, courts, and third parties.
  • Prepare and respond to discovery requests.
  • Review, organize, and summarize discovery responses and financial records.
  • Prepare child support worksheets and assist with support calculations.
  • Assist clients in preparing and gathering required documentation.
  • Prepare hearing and trial materials.

Client Communication

  • Communicate regularly with clients regarding case status, upcoming hearings, and required information.
  • Conduct intake calls with prospective clients.
  • Gather information and documentation needed for case preparation.
  • Provide exceptional client service with professionalism and empathy.

Administrative & Billing Support

  • Open and maintain client files.
  • Enter attorney time and assist with billing through Clio.
  • Generate invoices and assist with accounts receivable tracking.
  • Perform general administrative tasks, including scanning, filing, and document management.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate's degree, bachelor's degree, paralegal certificate, or comparable experience working in a law office.
  • Prior family law experience preferred but not required.
  • Experience with Indiana E-Filing preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Experience with Clio, LawPay, or other legal practice management software is a plus.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to independently learn new software, procedures, and legal concepts through research, training materials, and practical application.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple deadlines.
