About this role

Your Day-to-day / Āu Mahi Ia Te Rā You’ll sit at the heart of the business, providing expert legal guidance that enables Lotto NZ to operate confidently, compliantly, and commercially:

  • Lead the negotiation and drafting of major technology and digital contracts, supporting transformation programmes and cloud-based solutions.
  • Provide strategic in-house legal advice across regulatory, legislative, and corporate matters impacting the organisation.
  • Ensure government sourcing rules are met and commercial outcomes are maximised.
  • Oversee contract management frameworks to minimise risk and unlock value across key supplier relationships.
  • Act as a key advisor on high-risk or complex issues, influencing decisions at senior levels.
  • Support policy development, legal compliance, and regulatory obligations including OIA, Privacy, Fair Trading and Gambling legislation.
  • Play a pivotal role in governance, including supporting Board and Audit & Risk Committee processes.

This is a highly visible role where your advice directly shapes business outcomes and protects Lotto NZ’s long-term success.

Your Team / Tō Rōpū You’ll be part of a collaborative, values-driven environment managing the Legal & Procurement team and operating as the organisation’s senior legal expert, working closely with leaders across the business. You’ll report to the Chief Financial Officer and sit on Lotto NZ’s Senior Leadership Team.You’ll also engage externally with key stakeholders, including government agencies such as MBIE, and act as a trusted partner across both internal and external networks.

A bit about you / He kōrero mōu: You’re a commercially minded legal leader who thrives in complexity and knows how to balance risk with opportunity.

  • Qualified lawyer with 5+ years’ experience in a commercial legal environment.
  • Strong background in technology, digital, or complex commercial contracting.
  • Proven experience negotiating high-value contracts and supporting procurement processes.
  • Deep understanding of NZ contract law, with exposure to public law or regulated environments an advantage.
  • A confident communicator who can influence and advise at all levels.
  • Highly analytical with sound judgement, able to solve complex problems and make decisions under pressure.
  • Known for building trusted relationships and collaborating effectively across diverse stakeholders.
